1. Shenandoah River State Park

Location: Bentonville, VA. River right around mile 32.
Amenities: Water and electric hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, lantern holders, tent, RV, and Yurt camping
Highlights: Over 5 miles of river to explore in the campground area

When it comes to having something for everyone in a Shenandoah River campsite, Shenandoah River State Park camping fits the bill. There are 31 sites and opportunities for tent, RV, yurt, and cabin camping. This Shenandoah River camping area has drinking water, showers, picnic tables, and everything you may need while offering a rugged camping experience. With over five miles of river shoreline to explore in the campground area, there are many beautiful views and fun.

2. Gooney Creek Campground

Location: Front Royal, VA. River right at mile 37.
Amenities: bathrooms, picnic tables, RV hookups
Highlights: Swimming holes, Gooney Creek access

Found just across the street from Karo landing, the Gooney Creek campground is great for traveling families looking for an excellent Shenandoah River campsite. Thanks to all the little swimming holes and creeks to explore around the campsite, this spot is affordable. You can even book the entire campground for an event (if you give enough notice).

3. Low Water Bridge Campground

Location: Bentonville, VA. River left at mile 28.5.
Amenities: Electrical setups, hot showers, and primitive campsite
Highlights: Riverside access with stunning views!

Found right along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, Low Water Bridge Campground has some of the most scenic riverfront Shenandoah River camping around, with primitive sites and electrical hookups. This campsite has lovely shade from trees and the sound of the river at many campsites.

4. George Washington National Forest – High Cliffs Canoe Campground

Location: River left at mile 13
Amenities: Primitive, some facilities
Highlights: Remote camping right off the river

Want to get the most out of being near water? The High Cliffs Canoe Campground in George Washington National Forest is just steps from the river. This is a free (no fee) canoe camping option for anyone making their way down the river. To stop at this Shenandoah River campsite on the river, pull off to the left just past the small rapid at mile 13. Don’t have your own watercraft? 5. JR Campground

Location: River right past mile 13
Amenities: Camping facilities and recreational offerings
Highlights: Central location

JR Campground, located 15 miles from Front Royal and 8 miles from Luray, offers a great retreat in Virginia’s outdoors. Right on the river and near Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park, it provides a perfect base for exploring the nearby trails and enjoying all of the neighboring outdoor adventures.

6. George Washington National Forest – Compton Rapid

Location: River left at mile 17
Amenities: Primitive campsite
Highlights: Riverside camping

Just past the Compton Raid rapid at the mile 17 marker, you’ll find the Compton Raid campground! This primitive camping area is one of our favorite spots to stop and pitch a tent on the river. Just make sure you stop on the left, because the right side of the river is private property.

7. River Run Campground

Location: River right just before mile 18
Amenities: Some facilities
Highlights: Great family camping

At the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, River Run Campground is the perfect stop for when you know your kids need to run wild for a while. There are places to splash in the river, spacious grounds for yard games, and lots of activities to explore just a stone’s throw from the campsite, like cavern tours, zoo visits, and creative mazes!
